Tackling Climate Change Through Tax

In Scotland, the richer you are, on average, the more you pollute and those with the least are the most vulnerable to climate impacts.

Why should tax help fight climate change? Because the wealthiest often pollute more.

In Scotland, the richer you are, on average, the more you pollute. At the same time, those with the least are the most vulnerable to climate impacts: like when homes are flooded or damaged in violent storms.

Why it matters

Scotland has broken a string of climate promises: missing crucial pollution reduction targets while failing to invest enough in common sense green initiatives. Scotland is also one of the most nature-depleted countries in Europe. We must take bold action now.

At Tax Justice Scotland, we believe in making polluters pay their fair share while supporting businesses and communities to go green. We call for taxes that penalise the biggest polluters and reward those leading the way in sustainability.

Taxing polluters will not only fund climate action but also incentivise businesses and the wealthiest individuals to reduce their environmental impact.

We can do this by:

  • Making polluters contribute to climate solutions

By designing taxes that hold the wealthiest polluters accountable, we can raise the funds needed for climate action.

  • Incentivising green behaviour

Taxes on high emitting businesses can encourage them to adopt cleaner, more sustainable practices.

Fairer taxes for a greener future

We’re asking the Scottish Government to explore a range of environmental taxes, including higher levies on carbon-intensive industries and the implementation of a Scottish private jet tax. This revenue could be invested in green infrastructure, renewable energy, and support for workers in transitioning industries.

By ensuring those with more resources contribute to the fight against climate change, we can build a sustainable Scotland for all.
